Picture this, you’re riding a high-speed train surrounded by panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, passing distant glaciers and ice-blue lakes along the way. This one of a kind, bucket list ride is called the Glacier Express.

Zermatt, Switzerland
If you’re looking for a bucket list travel experience that feels straight out of a winter fairytale, the Glacier Express is a must. The world’s slowest high-speed train connects the alpine resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz in scenic fashion, offering a front-row seat to stunning winter landscapes.
What makes this train special?
The route
The 8-hour adventure takes you through some of Switzerland’s most beautiful sights. You’ll pass
through 91 tunnels, cross 291 bridges, and climb to 2,033 meters at the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the journey. In the winter, snow blankets the Alps and creates the feeling of traveling through a real-life snow globe. The panoramic windows in both the regular and excellence classes allow for perfect views of the turquoise rivers, cute little villages and icy peaks as they pass by.
So, you may be wondering how I know so much about this route? Well, each seat has a headset that tells you about the landmarks and nature as you pass through. At various points, a ‘ding’ sound will signal to you to put in your headphones. Through the headphones, the narrator will tell you facts and stories about the journey as you go.
The food and service
Between the delicious menu choices and the great service, this ride guarantees you a memorable dining experience. During the journey, the staff will serve Excellence Class passengers a 5-course meal. Those passengers can also access the Glacier Bar on the train. For those seated in the (equally beautiful) general class, you can select as many courses as you’d like from the a la carte menu. I would highly recommend at least one course on board in order to get the full, luxurious experience!
Pro tip: Regardless of your meal choice, you will want to pack your own snacks and food for the long journey! Outside food and drinks are permitted on board.

Tips for a perfect trip
- Reserve early: These tickets book well in advance for this popular route, especially during the winter time. Make sure to book in advance to secure your spot!
- Select the best seats: Make sure that your seats are facing in to the train car for the full panoramic view.
- Wear layers: While the train is kept nice and warm (maybe even too warm if the sun is beaming through the skylight), it makes a few stops along the way with an option to hop off and stretch your legs. Keep your layers close by so you can take advantage of these stops without freezing!
- Pack some cards: The 8 hour long journey leaves plenty of time for admiring the views and also sneaking in a card game or two with your travel friends.

Bon voyage!
